Over the past few years we have become quite selective about the kind of work we do, rather we should say that it not really about the work that we do, but the people that we work with. We have a solid team of amazing Drupal developers who are always hungry for challenging work but we do receive lot of inquiries for simple website designing work where Drupal is not really required, there are plenty of other CMS for developing a simple website with great design.
However we have recently started collaborating with other Drupal companies in Delhi and NCR region and personally my goal is to make a team of various other good Drupal shops, freelancers and part time developers. Over the past 1 year we have already met really amazing people and we loved working with them. This model is working great for us. We are able to focus on the kind of work we do, but we are now not refusing the work like earlier. Whenever we receive a new lead, our first approach is to evaluate whether we can do it ourselves, being a company with less than 10 people we can't really do everything. Also we only work in Drupal also stricts us from working on other projects. After internal discussion we decide whether to develop the project or not, if not then we talk to other Drupal shops in the our region, not every company is same. We know companies with 40+ people who work in various technologies and Drupal is also part of it. We also know freelancers who are always eager to get new projects.
This collaboration model has really worked for us and to our surprise the other companies also refer projects to us. I think it is win win for everyone and instead of loosing a lead we have increased the probability to win the contract.
Of course this approach only works when client is ok with it. We don't hide from the client that we will get it done from external people. We also refer the companies directly to our client.
