Atlassian Weekly Highlights: Team Updates, Whiteboards, Docker, and More

Submitted by vinod on

The Atlassian ecosystem is ever-evolving, and this week brought a wave of updates worth highlighting. From global events to new features and platform changes, here’s a curated summary to keep you in the loop.

Atlassian Team 2025: A Quick Mention

Although I wasn’t able to attend this year’s Atlassian Team event in Los Angeles, many exciting announcements have emerged. Highlights include:

  • Rovo (Atlassian AI) becoming available across all plans
  • Private Atlassian Cloud updates

While no announcements around Data Center came up, I’ll dive deeper into these developments in a dedicated post soon.

New Whiteboard Templates in Confluence

Whiteboards, introduced last year, continue to evolve. They now include a set of ready-to-use templates, helping users quickly get started with visual collaboration.

Why It Matters:

  • Seamless Jira integration remains a core strength
  • Templates like Executive Summary can jumpstart planning sessions
  • Even free plan users can create and edit up to three whiteboards

Pro tip: Try the new templates via the “Create” button in Confluence and explore options beyond the blank canvas.

Docker Image Management in Bitbucket Cloud

For DevOps professionals, Bitbucket Cloud is rolling out a new feature: Docker image management directly within Bitbucket.

Key Insights:

  • Manage container images natively without relying on Docker Hub
  • Useful for teams implementing CI/CD pipelines via Bitbucket
  • Currently in preview, expected to launch more broadly soon

This change can significantly streamline workflows, especially for those deeply integrated with Bitbucket Cloud.

Atlassian University is Now Atlassian Learning

A subtle but important rebrand: Atlassian University has now become Atlassian Learning.

What’s New:

  • Courses (many free) are still accessible
  • Data Center certifications are being phased out
  • Learning paths now support onboarding and continuous learning

If you're new to Jira or Confluence, it’s a great time to explore Atlassian Learning as a structured resource.

Upcoming Event: Team Tour Singapore

Mark your calendars for Team Tour Singapore happening on May 14th at Marina Bay Sands.

Event Highlights:

  • AI-focused sessions
  • Networking opportunities with peers and clients
  • Free registration

Even if you're not in Singapore, this event reflects Atlassian's global outreach and the growing emphasis on AI.

When to Break the Rules in Jira: A New Video

A recently released video challenges the conventional wisdom of keeping your Jira instance "clean."

Summary:

  • Custom fields and configurations shouldn’t be feared
  • Strive for balance: optimize Jira based on user needs
  • Don't let best practices stop you from solving real problems

Jira is a tool meant to serve the organization—not the other way around.

Compass + Components: A Confusing UX

Many users are facing issues with creating components in Jira due to Compass integration.

The Problem:

  • Attempting to create components redirects users to Compass
  • Users must manually switch back to traditional Jira components

This causes confusion, especially for project managers. Atlassian might need to revisit this UX decision soon.
